In the project KVARTAL we imply and refine the A101 idea of creating a standard, within which diversification is possible. We do that on different levels by fractalising the block into spaces and communities of different scales: from the urban level down to the singular room.

Following a clear hierarchy and a modular logic the transition between the different scales is made possible. The plot is regulated by a check-board like grid, within which the buildings rise. The spatial setting of the buildings configures both urban life around the block, as well as the social relations inside it. The logic goes on into the formation of the buildings’ interiors and their facades, allowing a continuous passing from the public, to the common and then to the private.

This results in a continuous dialog between urban societies on different scales: from the anonymity of the city to the most intimate room of an apartment. The modularity and distinctive hierarchy of scales makes the plan controllable on a social, as well as economical levels. Every scale is a framework, which allows spatial, economical and social evolution in time.

In het project KVARTAL implementeren en verfijnen wij het A101 idee van een standaard en waarin diversificatie mogelijk is. Wij doen dat op verschillenden niveaus, door het 'fractaliseren' van het stedelijke blok in ruimtes en gemeenschappen van diverse schalen: van het grootschalige urbane niveau tot het enkele vertrek.

De overgang tussen de verschillende schalen wordt mogelijk gemaakt door een duidelijke hiërarchie en een modulaire logica. De kavel wordt gereglementeerd door een schaakbordachtige grid, waarbinnen de gebouwen groeien. De configuratie van de gebouwen op de kavel bepaalt zowel het stedelijke leven om het blok heen als wel de sociale relaties binnenin het blok. Eenzelfde logica wordt toegepast in de plattegronden van de gebouwen. Hierdoor wordt een geleidelijke overgang van het publieke via het gemeenschappelijke naar het privédomein gecreëerd.

Dit resulteert in een continue dialoog tussen gemeenschappen van verschillende schaal; van de anonimiteit van de stad tot de meest intieme ruimtes van een appartement. Het systeem en de hiërarchie die gegenereerd wordt maken het project controleerbaar op zowel sociaal als economisch niveau. Elke schaal is een kader waarbinnen economische en sociale revolutie binnen het blok mogelijk wordt.
